In Ayacucho, Peru, the harvest season begins in April when conditions are dry, the same time that the Otis team visited.
This recent trip to Peru was to meet with our suppliers, to check in on a new social sustainability initiative and to show six Costco buyers around. Otis McAllister and Costco first toured Alisur’s state of the art quinoa facility near the Lima port.
The next day, Alisur, Costco and Otis traveled up to the highlands to visit the quinoa farmers outside of Ayacucho. The first stop was at Hogar de Ancianos Padre Saturnino, an elderly care home that has been receiving shipments of medical supplies through a partnership formed between
Otis McAllister, Alisur and VIDA, a charity organization in the Bay Area that sends donated medical supplies to 12 Latin American and Caribbean countries.
Upon arrival to the quinoa farms the group was met with a ceremonial ribbon cutting ceremony. This was a celebration for the opening of a new road built by Alisur to help the community transport quinoa from farm to facility. Afterward there was a pachamanca feast and a traditional dance performance
